If you know me, you'll know my favourite book of all time is One Day by David Nicholls, and I can confidently say I share this feeling with a lot of 19 year old book addicts. The narration and reality of such a story is just stunning, I can't think of a better way to describe it. It was when I finished One Day, the stunning tale of a whirlwind friendship between Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morely, that I found my favourite writer - David Nicholls. But this is no book review, (it kinda is) this post is about the feelings I felt after realizing I really did not like the writers follow up book.
I remember when 'Us' first came into the shops, and I could not stop thinking about the story of a couple who's relationship slowly fades away as their son, Alby, grows.
I'll give it to David (yep, I'm calling him that now) the story itself, the message it gives, is right up my street. It has an honest narrative, with beautiful descriptives. But there's something that just didn't make me fall in love with Connie and Douglas like I did with Dex and Em. I don't know why. It could be because they're older, or it could be I really got to know Dexter and Emma when I spent every St. Switherns day with them for 20 years, chapter by chapter.

But the point of this is, I felt utterly lost (slight exaggeration I know.) It was like I was forcing myself to love something I really couldn't. The point I'm trying to make is, just because you love one thing, it doesn't mean you're going to love the other. Part of a writers job is to find an audience for each book, and provide to it. Some stick to one, others differ. Thinking about it, this just proves that Nicholls is an even more incredible writer than he was before, by having the ability to write two very good books, but just for two very different types of people.
David Nicholls is still my favourite writer, by far, I've just decided maybe I should open books with an open mind and less of a critical eye.
I really, really wanted to share this post with you guys. I know it's not the best I've written - but when I get passionate and emotional about things, I don't really make that much sense. Haha. Thanks for getting to the end! Lots of love xxx
